Preview – King’s Day in Groningen (4)

The Grote Markt is the main square in the middle of the city of Groningen, The Netherlands. After leaving the Martini Church this is where the Dutch royals walk to on King’s Day on 27 April 2018. Once presumably a wonderful square, I’ve never found it very beautiful. In the aftermath of World War II in 1945 many surrounding buildings were destroyed by bombs and fights. What they quickly built afterwards doesn’t receive a prize in a beauty contest. Opposite the city hall they’re building the Groninger Forum now. At the Grote Markt the royal family will hear about the problems with earthquakes in the Province of Groningen because of gas extraction. Another theme are innovative companies.

In the back of the city hall is the Waagplein where the family meets social Groningers and initiatives. There is also lots of music and Groningers who have been decorated this year.

The Oude Boteringestraat – when I passed there was a cycling race, hence the fences – between the Waagplein and the Broerplein will be full of people dancing and singing. At the Broerplein one finds the Academy Building of the University of Groningen. Usually the square is full of bicycles, but they will all be removed on 27 April. The stones here and at the Vismarkt are not funny when you’re walking on high heels, like lots of princesses, so I’d say: leave them at home ladies, or take an extra pair of flat shoes with you. At the Broerplein are of course students and another theme is sport.
