Winter Palace Het Loo

Exhibitions

A must see is “Winter Paleis Het Loo” (Winter Palace Het Loo) at Palace Het Loo in Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. Usually in the last two weeks of December and the first week of January Christmas decoration is all over the palace. This year the event is being held from 17 December 2016 to 8 January 2017 (a sneakpeak video). As I hadn’t seen the present exhibition about “Anna Pavlovna” yet, I took the opportunity to see both the exhibition and the Christmas decoration.

On the Stables Square is an ice rink. Inside the palace – and already at the ticket office – you find lovely decorated Christmas trees, festive tables … with as the highlight this year the festive table of King Willem II and Queen Anna Pavlovna in the Audience Hall. This table shows Russian porcelain, glassware and gilded silver table pieces. There is also a table and Christmas tree, decorated in Russian style in the drawing room of King Willem II.

In the East Wing of the palace there is also the Christmas table of Princess Margriet and her family. And quite interesting – folding serviettes. I remember there was once a wonderful Christmas tree there where halfway the palace you go down the stairs again … unfortunately no longer there. Or is it just my imagination playing tricks with me? I remember the smell of oranges …

At the moment there is the lovely exhibition “Anna Pavlovna” in the West Wing (more about that later), until 5 February 2017. The new exhibition will be “Chapeaux! The Hats of Queen Beatrix”, from 23 March to 27 August 2017 – a must for the fans of the hats of Princess Beatrix when she was Queen of the Netherlands. From 10 January to 4 June 2017 the Glass-Berline that was used for the wedding of Princess Margriet and Pieter van Vollenhoven on 10 January 1967 – 50 years ago! – will be on show in the “Koetshuis” of the Palace (coach-house). Very interesting too is that on 15, 16 and 17 June 2017 a concert version of the musical “Sissi” will take place in the palace grounds (open air). Much also to look forward to in the coming year.
